The Plain Feel Doctrine is briefly discussed.

Abstract

The handbook summarizes Minnesota v. Dickerson in which the U.S. Supreme Court adopted the Plain Feel Doctrine. Applying the doctrine to the facts of the case and analogizing the Plain Feel Doctrine to the Plain View Doctrine adopted in Terry v. Ohio, the Court determined that the police officers exceeded the Terry limits when the officer continued to explore the defendant's pocket after concluding that it contained no weapon. This handbook provides a brief summary of significant search and seizure cases decided by the Court. In addition, on a matter unrelated to the main topic of the handbook, a very brief discussion of conducting an abuse investigation is provided.
