STUDY TO INCREASE CAPABILITY OF FORENSIC SCIENCE LABS IN HANDLING DIFFICULT IDENTIFICATIONS THROUGH USE OF A COMPUTERIZED INFRARED DATA FILE AND SEARCH SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE PILOT OPERATION OF A CENTRALLY LOCATED INFRARED DATA FILE SEARCH SERVICE WAS ESTABLISHED TO SERVICE THE CRIMINALISTICS RESEARCH BUREAU, THE N.Y. STATE POLICE SCIENCE LABORATORY, AND THE N.Y. MEDICAL EXAMINERS LABORATORY. THE RESEARCH INDICATED THAT A CENTRAL REGISTRY OF INFRARED SPECTROGRAMS ENHANCED FORENSIC LAB OPERATIONS AND FURTHER PROVED THE SIGNIFICANT ANALYTICAL VALUE OF INFRARED SPECTROPHOTOMETRY. PRODUCTS OF THE RESEARCH INCLUDE A COMPLETE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION, A PRELIMINARY OPERATOR'S MANUAL (APPENDIX A), AND PROGRAMMATIC OPERATOR'S INSTRUCTIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MDOFIED).
