This article underscores the importance of physical fitness for law enforcement officers and offers recommendations for agencies seeking to implement officer wellness programs.
Abstract
The unique and physically taxing work demands of law enforcement officers require these employees to be in top physical condition. However, startling research has indicated that police officers more often suffer from heart disease, hypertension, obesity, ulcers, cancer, and depression than the general population. The cost to police agencies for these health problems is staggering, especially when the costs of police officer injuries are factored in. It is imperative that police agencies redirect these funds to the implementation of officer wellness programs so that the overall health outcomes of officers improve and the health care costs to agencies decrease. Recommendations are offered for agencies planning and implementing wellness plans, including tips on selecting a physical trainer and matching physical fitness training goals to other mandated police classes, such as arrest and control strategy courses. Investing the time and resources into police officer wellness programming will help build positive lifestyle changes that should improve the overall health and longevity of police officers. Endnotes
