Abstract
Created in 1861 as the first Territorial Supreme Court of the Dakota Territory, the South Dakota Supreme Court was approved as part of the State constitution in 1889, when all newly elected judges of the Supreme Court and circuit courts took their oaths of office. In 1891, the Supreme Court moved into the new wooden capitol building in Pierre. In 1905, the State legislature authorized the construction of a new stone capitol, which became the third home of the Supreme Court. The final section of the report includes photographs on the remodeling and restoration of the Supreme Court chamber.
