DESCRIPTION OF A PROGRAM DEVELOPED BY THE NASSAU COUNTY, (NEW YORK) POLICE DEPARTMENT TO RETURN STOLEN MERCHANDISE TO STOREOWNERS WHO ARE THE VICTIMS OF SHOPLIFTING ON THE DAY THEIR STOLEN MERCHANDISE IS RECOVERED.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM INVOLVES PHOTOGRAPHING THE EVIDENCE WITH AN INSTANT DEVELOPING CAMERA IN THE PRESENCE OF THE POLICE INVESTIGATOR, AND BOTH THE MERCHANT AND THE OFFICER IDENTIFYING AND INITIALING THE PHOTOGRAPHS. THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE USED AS EVIDENCE AND THE STOLEN MERCHANDISE IS RETURNED TO THE MERCHANT. THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS PROGRAM ARE IDENTIFIED AS NOT DEPRIVING THE VICTIM OF HIS PROPERTY, NON-INVOLVEMENT OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT PROPERTY OFFICE, AND TIME SAVED BY THE POLICE AND THE MERCHANT....EB
