PROJECT DESIGNED TO REDUCE CRIME AND RECIDIVISM IN THE LUDLOW COMMUNITY OF NORTH PHILADELPHIA BY PROVIDING COMMUNITY SERVICES.
Abstract
THE CENTER PROVIDES AN INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICE TO COMMUNITY RESIDENTS AND A TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICE BETWEEN INMATES IN GRATERFORD PRISON AND FRIENDS AND FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY. IT ALSO ESTABLISHED AN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CENTER TO ASSIST PEOPLE IN THE LUDLOW COMMUNITY TO PLAN FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT. SIX ON-SITE VISITS, A REVIEW OF PROJECT RECORDS AND CLIENT CASE FILES, AND STAFF AND CLIENT INTERVIEWS CONSTITUTED PROGRAM EVALUATION ACTIVITIES. EVALUATORS CONCLUDED THAT THE PROJECT HAS MET ITS MAJOR OBJECTIVES SINCE THE DROP-IN CENTER, DESIGN CENTER, AND PRISON VISITATION SERVICE WERE ALL OPERATING IN THE FORM PROPOSED. A COMMUNITY SURVEY INDICATED THAT THE PROJECT ENJOYED A HIGH DEGREE OF COMMUNITY RECOGNITION AND WAS VIEWED VERY FAVORABLY BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT THE CENTER SEEK ADDITIONAL COURCES OF FUNDING TO INCREASE PROGRAM IMPACT, IMPROVE THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF THE DROP-IN SERVICE BY MAKING IT MORE WIDELY KNOWN IN THE COMMUNITY, AND RE-EVALUATE INTERNAL PRIORITIES AND ACTIVITIES SO THAT ACTIVITIES CAN FUNCTION IN THE ABSENCE OF THE DIRECTOR.
