THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO IDENTIFY JUVENILE DRUG USERS THROUGH URINALYSIS SAMPLES SECURED AT YOUTH STUDY CENTER HEARINGS, DETENTION CENTER, PROJECT OFFICES AND FAMILY COURT AND TO REFER THE USERS TO TREATMENT PROGRAMS.
Abstract
SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS PROJECT WERE UNCOVERED BY EVALUATORS, INCLUDING THE ETHICAL QUESTION OF OBTAINING THE URINALYSIS SAMPLES AND THE EXPENSE OF SOPHISTICATED URINALYSIS TECHNIQUES. JUVENILES WHO ARE TESTED DRUG POSITIVE HAVE LETTERS SENT TO THEIR PARENTS BY THE JUVENILE DRUG IDENTIFICATION REFERRAL STAFF (JDIR) REQUESTING THEM TO COME IN FOR AN APPOINTMENT. IF THAT FAILS, THE PARENTS ARE CALLED UP BY TELEPHONE, AND IF THAT FAILS THEY ARE VISTED BY A SOCIAL WORKER OR PROBATION OFFICERS. THE JUVENILE CLIENTS ARE THEN COUNSELLED TO ACCEPT REFERRAL TO A DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAM. DATA CONCERNING NUMBER OF REFERRALS, URINALYSIS RESULTS, AND FOLLOW-UP INFORMATION IS PRESENTED.
