ASSESSMENT AND ANALYSIS OF A CHRONIC OFFENDER'S PERCEPTIONS AS HE MOVED FROM PRISON INTO THE COMMUNITY.
Abstract
A SECOND PURPOSE WAS TO STUDY THE PAROLE OFFICER'S ESTIMATION OF THE SUBJECT'S PERCEPTIONS. SPECIAL ATTENTION WAS GIVEN TO CONCEPTS OF SELF AND TO GESTALT PERCEPTUAL DYNAMICS. AMONG THE VARIOUS RESULTS IT WAS FOUND THAT THE SUBJECT DISAGREED MORE WITH SELF- THAN WITH ENVIRONMENT-RELATED ITEMS. THE SUBJECT DID NOT DEMOSTRATE SUPERIORITY IN HIS ESSENTIAL SELF-CONCEPT. THE SUBJECT PERCEIVED HIMSELF TO BE FUNCTIONALLY INEFFECTIVE WHILE IN PRISON. FOLLOWING RELEASE HE PERCEIVED A DECREASE IN INEFFECTIVENESS BUT NO INCREASE IN FUNCTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS UNTIL AFTER A LONGER PERIOD OF FREEDOM. RESULTS FROM THE PAROLE OFFICER INDICATED A LACK OF AGREEMENT WITH THE SUBJECT'S RATINGS. PARADOXES PERCEIVED BY BOTH SUBJECT AND PAROLE OFFICER WERE DISCUSSED. REHABILITATION OF THE CHRONIC OFFENDER WAS SEEN AS REQUIRING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A TRUSTING INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OFFENDER AND OFFENDED. APPENDICES CONTAIN QUESTIONNAIRES AND RELATED MATERIAL. BIBLIOGRAPHY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
