PHARMACOLOGICAL TESTING RESULTS IN SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS TO THE INMATE IN TERMS OF ENHANCED SELF-ESTEEM AND POSITIVE ORIENTATION.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS EMPLOY AN EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN WITH STANDARDIZED PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS, NEWLY-DESIGNED MEASURES AND UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWING. A DRUG RESEARCH PROJECT FOR THE VOLUNTEERS WAS MODELED AFTER A TYPICAL FEDERAL DRUG ADMINISTRATION-MANDATED PHASE I INVESTIGATION IN THE INSTITUTION. ALL CURRENT PROCEDURES AND PRACTICES WERE FOLLOWED, EXCEPTING THAT PLACEBOS ONLY WERE ADMINISTERED, AND THE PRISONER VOLUNTEERS, IT THEY WISHED, WERE PERMITTED TO PARTICIPATE INSTEAD IN A SIMULTANEOUS NONDRUG STUDY. EXTENSIVE OBJECTIVE FINDINGS REGARDING PRISONER RESEARCH VOLUNTEERS ARE PRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME AND INCLUDE: DEMOGRAPHIC, PSYCHOLOGICAL, CRIMINAL HISTORY, INSTITUTIONAL ADJUSTMENT AND SOCIAL AND ATTITUDINAL CHARACTERISTICS; MOTIVATIONS IN VOLUNTEERING; PERCEPTION OF THE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES; PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF VOLUNTEERING; AND THE NATURE OF 'INFORMED CONSENT' IN VOLUNTEERING. SCIENTIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS, BASED UPON THE RESEARCH CONDUCTED, ARE MADE TO CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS AND PHARMACOLOGICAL RESEARCHERS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
