THIS TEXTBOOK, A MONOGRAPH ON THEORIES OF DEVIANCY BALANCED BY DESCRIPTIVE READINGS, ANALYZES FOUR THEORIES OF DEVIANCE GUIDED BY AN ORIGINAL PARADIGM.
Abstract
AFTER A PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION OF THE NATURE OF DEVIANCY AND SELECTED HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY EFFORTS AT UNDERSTANDING DEVIANCE, A PARADIGM (MODEL) IS PRESENTED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT DEVIANT BEHAVIOR THEORIES. THE SPECIFIC THEORIES CONSIDERED ARE THE LABELING OR INTERACTION PROCESS THEORY, ANOMIE THEORY, DIFFERENTIAL ASSOCIATION THEORY, AND SUBCULTURE THEORY. THE PARADIGM INVOLVES DEFINING AND LOCATING THE PHENOMENA BEING ANALYZED, DESCRIBING THE MILIEU SUPPORTING THE BEHAVIOR, AND COLLECTIVIZING AND STABILIZING OF DEVIANT PHENOMENA, WHERE APPLICABLE. A PROPOSITIONAL SURVEY OF EACH THEORY IS PRESENTED AND ANALYZED BY THE AUTHOR. THE MAJOR PROPOSITIONS OF THE FOUR THEORIES ARE THEN COMPARED FOR SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES. READINGS AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER ARE BASED ON RESEARCH AND ILLUSTRATE KEY POINTS OF THE VARIOUS THEORIES. A VARIETY OF FORMS OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR ARE DESCRIBED AND BACKGROUND MATERIAL FOR EACH IS PRESENTED.
