ASPECTS OF POLICE PERSONNEL SELECTION ARE EXAMINED IN AN AUDIO CASSETTE/MAGAZINE PRESENTATION EMPHASIZING FACTORS IN RECRUITING AND SELECTING FROM MINORITY GROUPS.
Abstract
THE TAPE AND CORRESPONDING WRITTEN MATERIALS COVER THE HISTORY OF MINORITIES IN POLICING, ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS AND SELECTION CRITERIA IN POLICE AGENCIES, DISCRIMINATORY HIRING PRACTICES, LEGAL REQUIREMENTS RELATIVE TO MINORITY RECRUITMENT, THE QUESTION OF WHETHER POLICE DEPARTMENTS ARE LOWERING MINIMUM ENTRANCE STANDARDS IN ORDER TO ATTRACT MINORITY CANDIDATES, AND A LANDMARK SUPREME COURT DECISION REGARDING PERSONNEL PRACTICES. POLICE EXECUTIVES ARE URGED TO REVIEW AND REVISE WRITTEN TESTS TO ASSURE THEY ARE NONDISCRIMINATORY AND TO REVIEW MINIMUM STANDARDS CONCERNING BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS, AGE, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, SEX, VISION, PHYSICAL AGILITY, AND MENTAL ABILITY. TRANSCRIPTS ARE PRESENTED OF TAPED INTERVIEWS WITH A MEMBER OF THE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS DIVISION OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE AND WITH A POLICE CHIEF, WHO DESCRIBES HOW HIS DEPARTMENT DEVELOPED ITS MINORITY RECRUITING PROGRAM. ALSO INCLUDED IN THE MAGAZINE ARE SUMMARIES OF ARTICLES ON POLICE TEAMS, THE HAZARDS OF STEEL-BELTED RADIAL TIRES FOR POLICE VEHICLES, UNIFORM CRIME CHARGING STANDARDS DEVELOPED IN CALIFORNIA, INNOVATIONS IN POLICE COMMUNICATIONS, LEGALIZED GAMBLING, AND THE TASER GUN (A WEAPON DESIGNED TO IMMOBILIZE RATHER THAN TO KILL).
