This booklet is designed to assist the crime prevention practitioner in preparing and presenting a 1-hour workshop on personal safety.
Abstract
An outline of the topics addressed is followed by a detailed instructor's guide that expands on each topic. An introduction of the topic (personal safety) includes current crime statistics for the area at issue, crime trends for the neighborhood or community, and the definition of self-defense. The core of the workshop focuses on three general aspects of preparing to deal with crime: prevention, confrontations, and physical resistance. Prevention involves taking steps to reduce the chances of becoming a victim. Confrontations involve how to act and what to say or do when confronted by a potential attacker. Physical resistance is used when all else fails. The section on crime prevention in general focuses on safety in the home, a vehicle, and activities outside the home. Aspects of confrontations are assessment of the situation and possible responses. The discussion of physical resistance considers awareness, verbal/psychological components of resistance, and physical efforts to resist an attacker. Nonlethal weapons displayed and discussed in the workshop are mace, a stun gun, and a shriek alarm. The booklet does not recommend the use of a handgun as a personal safety device, given the potential for lethal accidents or serious injury.
