STUDIES, METHODS, AND EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED TO UNDERSTAND METHODS BY WHICH PEOPLE IDENTIFY EACH OTHER ON THE BASIS OF PERSONAL APPEARANCE.
Abstract
EXPERIMENTS REVEALED THAT THE LONGER THE EXPOSURE THE BETTER A WITNESS' ABILITY TO IDENTIFY A PERSON. DIFFERENT VIEWS OF MUG SHOTS DO NOT SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE IDENTIFICATION. COLORED MUG SHOTS DO NOT APPRECIABLY HELP. NOSE, EYES, FACE SHAPE, HAIR, CHIN, AND MOUTH ARE MOST USED IDENTIFICATION FEATURES. DIMENSIONS OF FACIAL FEATURES AND RACE ARE GOOD CATEGORIES. DYNAMIC IMAGERY INCLUDING LISTENING TO A VOICE ASSISTS IDENTIFICATION. BASED ON THESE EXPERIMENTS RECOMMENDATIONS WERE MADE FOR AN AUTOMATIC PROCESSING OF PERSONAL APPEARANCE DATA SYSTEM (APPADS). TRAINING, TECHNIQUES AND AN INEXPENSIVE CAMERA ARE RECOMMENDED.
