This report is a Performance Update on the Recovery (ARRA) Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.
Abstract
The activities conducted with funds from this program cover seven allowable purpose areas: law enforcement activities, prosecution and court activities, prevention and education programs, corrections and community corrections, drug treatment and enforcement, planning, evaluation, and technology improvement, and crime victim and witness protection. This report focuses on activities conducted by law enforcement agencies using these funds to support task forces working under the Law Enforcement purpose area during the period July 2010 to June 2011. Key findings and observations from the report include the following: Alabama, American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Delaware, South Dakota, the Virgin Islands, and Vermont did not have any grantees or subgrantees reporting during the four reporting periods presented in this report; in general, drug task forces make large seizures once or twice a year; by weight, marijuana is the most seized drug nationally; marijuana is the only drug reported as being seized by every State that reports such seizures; the majority of drug task forces reporting drug seizure data are in the Southwest (32 percent), West Central (19 percent), and Great Lakes (18 percent) regions; the amount of cocaine seized during this period remained fairly consistent, while the large increase in marijuana seizures was due to large amounts being seized in two States; and the Southwest region seized the largest percentage of heroin during this period, followed by the New York/New Jersey region.
