Abstract
SIX REASONS FOR RATING PERFORMANCE ARE GIVEN - TO PROVIDE INCENTIVE AND TO RECOGNIZE AND REWARD GOOD WORK, TO HELP SUPERVISORS RECOGNIZE AND REMEDY WEAKNESSES IN EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE, TO PROVIDE EMPLOYEE GUIDANCE, TO IDENTIFY EMPLOYEES WHO SHOULD BE GIVEN SPECIFIC TYPES OF TRAINING, TO RECORD INFORMATION FOR MANAGEMENT, AND TO ESTABLISH A BASIS FOR DISCHARGING OR DEMOTING INCOMPETENT EMPLOYEES. METHODS OF RATING PERFORMANCE ARE DISCUSSED, AS ARE NUMEROUS ERRORS THAT ARE COMMONLY MADE BY SUPERVISORS WHEN RATING EMPLOYEES. THE PURPOSE, MANNER OF CONDUCT, AND FOLLOW-UP OF THE EMPLOYEE INTERVIEW ARE PRESENTED IN DETAIL.
