ACCOUNT OF LAWYERS WHO HAVE BEEN WILLING TO RISK THEIR REPUTATIONS AND INCOMES BY REPRESENTING UNPOPULAR CLIENTS AND CAUSES.
Abstract
AFTER A BRIEF, CHRONOLOGICAL, INTERPRETIVE OUTLINE OF THE 'PEOPLE'S' LAW MOVEMENT, THE AUTHOR PRESENTS A COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF THE INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS WHO HAVE JOINED TOGETHER TO FORM IT. THIS ACCOUNT OF THE 'LEFT LAW' MOVEMENT REFLECTS THE RANGE OF THE MOVEMENT, FROM THEORETICIANS TO ACTIVISTS, CONVENTIONAL FIRMS TO COLLECTIVES, FROM BILL OF RIGHTS ACTIVISTS TO ANTAGONISTS OF THE ENTIRE JUDICIAL SYSTEM. THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION, THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY CIVIL LIBERTIES COMMITTEE, POVERTY RIGHTS LAWYERS, CONSUMER RIGHTS LAWYERS, 'RADICAL' LAWYERS, THE NAACP LEGAL DEFENSE AND EDUCATION FUND, AND OTHER POLITICALLY LEFT-WING LEGAL ORGANIZATIONS.
