Abstract
FOLLOWING THE INTRODUCTION, THE SECOND SECTION OUTLINES THE TASKS OF THE SERVICE AND BRIEFLY SUMMARIZES THE BACKGROUND TO ITS WORK. THE NEXT PART EXAMINES WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE TREATMENT OF OFFENDERS IN CUSTODY, AND INCLUDES A CONDENSED REPORT OF WHAT HAS BEEN DONE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF MEDICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT, REMEDIAL AND HIGHER EDUCATION, AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND GROUP COUNSELING IN PRISONS AND BORSTALS. THE FOURTH SECTION DESCRIBES THE LINKS BETWEEN THE OFFENDER AND THE COMMUNITY, DISCUSSES THE WORK OF THE PROBATION AND AFTERCARE SERVICES, AND SUMMARIZES THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PAROLE SERVICE. PART FIVE DISCUSSES THE RECIDIVISM RATES OF DIFFERENT GROUPS OF OFFENDERS. THE NEXT SECTION DESCRIBES THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS DEALING WITH DIFFERENT GROUPS OF OFFENDERS AND SUMMARIZES THE GOVERNMENT'S PLANS FOR EACH GROUP. PART SEVEN DISCUSSES THE ORGANISATION OF CORRECTIONAL STAFF SERVICES, AND THE FINAL PART TIES IT ALL TOGETHER AND MAKES PREDICTIONS FOR THE FUTURE.
