AN ASSESSMENT OF THIS PROJECT WHICH ATTEMPTED TO DEVELOP CORRECTIONAL EDUCATORS WHO ARE SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF DISADVANTAGED LEARNERS FOUND IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION POPULATIONS AND TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATIONAL STAFF.
Abstract
THE LEHIGH UNIVERSITY SOCIAL RESTORATION PROGRAM DEVELOPS TEACHERS FOR CORRECTIONS BY MEANS OF A TRAINING PROGRAM WHICH IS FIELD-CENTERED AND COMPETENCY BASED. IN ALL ASPECTS OF THIS PROGRAM, EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL RESTORATION THEORIES ARE COMBINED WITH PRACTICE. THE TRAINING PROGRAM CONSISTS OF THREE PHASES - PRESERVICE, BASIC TRAINING, AND PRACTICUM. FIFTEEN SOCIAL RESTORATION INTERNS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROJECT. EVALUATION ACTIVITIES CONSISTED OF ON-SITE VISITS TO THE THREE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS, ON-SITE VISITS TO THE LEHIGH CENTER, INTERVIEWS WITH PERSONNEL, ANALYSIS OF PROJECT MATERIALS, AND INTERVIEWS WITH PROJECT INTERNS. THE EVALUATION SHOWED THAT THE TEACHER RESTORATION INTERN PROGRAM STRENGTHENED THE EDUCATIONAL STAFFS OF THE THREE PARTICIPATING CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS, AND DEVELOPED COMPETENT CORRECTIONAL EDUCATORS SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF THE DISADVANTAGED, INCARCERATED LEARNER. ALTHOUGH THE EVALUATOR CONCLUDED THAT THE PROGRAM WAS SUCCESSFUL IN TRAINING EDUCATORS, THERE WERE SERIOUS QUESTIONS AS TO WHETHER PERSONNEL WILL BE RETAINED BY THE BUREAU OF CORRECTIONS. THE EVALUATION COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS ARE APPENDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
