This report provides an overview of juvenile court dispositions in Pennsylvania during 2000 and summarizes juvenile court statistical data provided by county juvenile probation departments.
Abstract
The data presentations are categorized according to delinquency dispositions, delinquency placements, delinquency offenses, detention, demographics, dependency dispositions, and disposition and placement reviews. The data showed that although there were only 2,661 dispositions for juveniles aged 12 and under in 2000, this was a 32-percent increase since 1996. Dispositions for juveniles age 18 and over decreased 3.4 percent in this same time period. Placement data indicated that the popularity of boot camps as a placement for juveniles was increasing in Pennsylvania. Between 1999 and 2000, the number of placements to boot camps increased by one-half, while the use of foster care decreased by 76 percent. Less than one-half of 1 percent of the dispositions in Pennsylvania were for transfer to criminal court; the 183 transfers to criminal court in 2000 constituted a 63-percent decrease since 1996. In 2000 there were 239 fewer admissions to secure detention than in 1999. Extensive tabular and graphic data.
