This statistical summary provides an overview of the Juvenile Court operations in Pennsylvania; the bulk of the report is made up of tables.
Abstract
The summary is limited to Juvenile Court delinquency and dependency cases originating in county juvenile probation offices, with the majority of dependency cases originating in the County Child Welfare Agency and a limited number of dependency cases originating in county probation offices. Data show selected juvenile characteristics and the methods by which children were handled by each Court. This general data should be used by each county to identify areas of court management that may need further evaluation or monitoring. Specifically, statewide summary tables show dispositions for Juvenile Court cases for 1979, referrals for 1975-79, delinquency referrals 1975-79, placement of delinquency referrals 1977-79, juvenile placements by regions, time lapse data, and attorney representation by length of time to disposition. County tables show total cases processed during 1979, by reason for referral, by source of referral, by manner of handling, and by disposition. Placements to public and private institutions for delinquency are tabulated, together with placements of cases referred for delinquency offense or for dependency. Other tables illustrate such aspects as detention by facility before and after disposition, total detention days, total cases processed by age, by race, and by sex, child days detention by type, median time lapse in days in manner of handling, and selected dispositions by age.
