COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THREE JUVENILE GROUP HOMES IN PROVIDING AN ALTERNATIVE TO INSTITUTIONALIZATION, AIDING FAMILY REINTEGRATION, AND REDUCING JUVENILE RECIDIVISM.
Abstract
EFFECTIVENESS IS MEASURED IN TERMS OF THE PERCENTAGE OF RESIDENTS WHO WERE 'SUCCESSES' OUT OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF RESIDENTS RELEASED FROM THE PROGRAM. SUCCESSFUL RESIDENTS ARE THOSE WHO, AS A DIRECT RESULT OF PROGRAM INTERVENTION, HAVE BEEN RETURNED TO THE COMMUNITY (BEEN REINTEGRATED) AND HAVE BEEN CRIME-FREE SINCE THEIR RELEASE (THE USUAL 2-YEAR STANDARD FOR MEASURING RECIDIVISM CANNOT BE USED IN THESE RELATIVELY NEW PROGRAMS). COMPARISON FACTORS ARE SUCH THINGS AS TYPE OF OFFENSE, TARGET POPULATION, SEX, LONG-RANGE EFFECTIVENESS, SELF-CONCEPT AND SELF-CONTROL, INTERNAL VS. EXTERNAL ORIENTATION, SELECTION CRITERIA, COST EFFECTIVENESS, AND OVERALL CONTRIBUTION TO THE COMMUNITY. SUPPORTING DATA FOR THE ABOVE COMPARISONS IS PRESENTED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
