EVALUATION RESULTS ARE REPORTED FOR THE GAUDENZIA PROJECT, AN INMATE TREATMENT PROGRAM FOR DEALING WITH DRUG ABUSE, LARGELY THROUGH COUNSELING, IN 3 PENNSYLVANIA STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS.
Abstract
THIS FINAL EVALUATION REPORT ENCOMPASSES A 9-MONTH PERIOD BETWEEN FEBRUARY 1, 1975 AND OCTOBER 31, 1975. THE EVALUATION INVOLVED ONSITE VISITS TO THE 3 PENNSYLVANIA STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS WHERE GAUDENZIA DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAMS WERE CONDUCTED. PERSONAL CONFERENCES WERE HELD WITH THE GAUDENZIA AREA DIRECTOR, THE GAUDENZIA TRAINERS AT THE INSTITUTIONS STUDIED, AND THE DIRECTORS OF TREATMENT AT TWO OF THE INSTITUTIONS STUDIED. IN ADDITION, A RANDOM SAMPLING OF RESIDENT PARTICIPANTS WERE INTERVIEWED AND RELEVANT FEEDBACK DOCUMENTED. THE PROGRAMMATIC OBJECTIVE SET FORTH IN THE SUBGRANT PROPOSAL INVOLVED THE DEVELOPMENT OF DRUG TREATMENT AND COUNSELING GROUPS WITHIN AN INSTITUTIONAL SETTING FOR THE PURPOSE OF EFFECTING ATTITUDINAL CHANGES IN PARTICIPANTS WHICH WOULD NOT ONLY ENABLE THEM TO ADJUST WITHIN THE INSTITUTIONAL SETTING BUT MODIFY BASIC BEHAVIOR CONTRIBUTING TO THEIR DRUG PROBLEM. THE PROJECT PROVIDED THAT TRAINERS FROM GAUDENZIA WOULD VISIT REGULARLY EACH OF THE INVOLVED INSTITUTIONS ACCORDING TO AN AGREED-UPON SCHEDULE AND INTERVIEW, ORIENT, MOTIVATE, AND SCREEN AND ENLIST PARTICIPANTS WHO EXPRESSED AN INTEREST IN THE GROUP SESSIONS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THIS PHASE OF THE PROJECT WAS SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHED WITH VARYING DEGREES OF COOPERATION AND INVOLVEMENT BY INSTITUTIONAL PERSONNEL. A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF RESIDENTS WERE SELECTED AND BECAME INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT DURING THE STUDY PERIOD. ATTEMPTS TO CHART AND DOCUMENT INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANT PROGRESS WERE UNSUCCESSFUL DUE TO THE SHORT TIME PERIOD INVOLVED AND AN ABSENCE OF CLEAR CRITERIA FOR PROGRESS MEASUREMENT. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE OFFERED. DATA DERIVED FROM THE STUDY AND SAMPLE FORMS USED IN THE PROGRAM ARE PROVIDED IN THE APPENDIXES. (RCB)
