A NINETEENTH CENTURY HISTORICAL OBSERVATION OF THE PENAL SYSTEM IN AMERICA BY TWO FRENCH ARISTOCRATS.
Abstract
THE FIRST OF A SERIES ENTITLED PERSPECTIVES IN SOCIOLOGY. THIS WORK DEALS WITH ORDER AND STABILITY IN HUMAN ORGANIZATIONS AND THE EFFORTS TO DEAL WITH THE INEVITABLE PROBLEMS OF DEVIANCE WHICH ARISE. THE AUTHORS LOOKED UPON THE PRISONER AS A REDEEMABLE BEING, THEIR BASIC ATTITUDE, HOWEVER, IS ONE OF MARKED RESERVATION AS TO HOW MUCH REDEMPTION IS POSSIBLE. THE SOCIAL VIEWS MUST BE SEEN, AT LEAST IN PART, AS THE PRODUCTS OF THE AUTHOR'S ARISTOCRATIC BACKGROUNDS, YET THEIR SOCIOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS WERE EXTREMELY ASTUTE AND CONTEMPORARY.
