OVERVIEW OF THE SYSTEM, DESCRIBING MEASURES THAT MAY BE APPLIED TO OFFENDERS, PENAL INSTITUTIONS, THE NATURE OF THE CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS IN THE VARIOUS INSTITUTIONS AND STAFF ORGANIZATION AND TRAINING.
Abstract
A DIAGRAM SHOWING THE HIERARCHICAL ORGANIZATION OF THE PROSECUTION, THE POLICE AND THE PRISON SYSTEM IN DENMARK IS PROVIDED. THE VARIOUS TYPES OF COURTS AND THE SORTS OF CASES THEY TRY ARE DESCRIBED. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DANISH CRIMINAL CODE AND OTHER PERTINENT LEGISLATION IS GIVEN. LEGAL PROVISIONS PRECLUDING PUNISHMENT BECAUSE OF PSYCHIC ABNORMALITIES ARE CITED. A TABLE PROVIDES STATISTICS ON SANCTIONS APPLIED FOR CRIMINAL CODE OFFENSES IN 1968, AND TWO TABLES SHOW THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF INMATES IN THE VARIOUS TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS IN 1969 AND THE ACTUAL NUMBER OF INMATES ON APRIL 1, 1971, RESPECTIVELY. A MAP OF DENMARK IS USED TO INDICATE THE LOCATION OF THE VARIOUS PENAL INSTITUTIONS. INCLUDED ARE NUMEROUS INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF PENAL INSTITUTIONS. A 'SUPPLEMENTARY TEST' TO THE DOCUMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE, DATED SEPTEMBER, 1974, IS ATTACHED. IT STATES THAT THE FOLLOWING SANCTIONS WERE ABOLISHED AS OF JULY 1, 1973 - YOUTH PRISON, WORKHOUSE, SECURITY DETENTION, SPECIAL IMPRISONMENT (FOR MENTALLY ABNORMAL OFFENDERS) AND SPECIAL MEASURES OF ALCOHOLICS. THESE SANCTIONS WERE ABOLISHED DUE TO GENERAL CRITICISM OF THEIR MORE OR LESS INDETERMINATE NATURE AND THE DECREASING USE OF THEM.
