Abstract
THE PAPERS WERE PRESENTED TO THE CROPWOOD ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE IN 1976. THE CONFERENCE BROUGHT TOGETHER A GROUP OF ACADEMICS AND PEOPLE WITH RELEVANT PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN PENAL POLICYMAKING TO DISCUSS SPECIFIC TOPICAL ISSUES IN PENAL POLICY. SUBJECTS COVERED WERE THE ROLE OF VOLUNTARY ORGANIZATIONS AS PRESSURE GROUPS IN PENAL REFORM, THE ROLE OF OFFICIAL ADVISORY BOARDS, THE INFLUENCE OF THE NEWS MEDIA ON PENAL POLICY, PARLIAMENT AND PENAL POLICY, THE INFLUENCE OF THE PRISON SERVICE AND THE PROBATION AND AFTERCARE SERVICE, THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE JUDICIARY TO PENAL POLICYMAKING, RESEARCH AND POLICYMAKING, AND THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE HOME OFFICE TO PENAL POLICY. EACH PAPER IS CONCLUDED BY DISCUSSION BY PARTICIPANTS.
