After a community member was murdered in the Honeydew community of Johannesburg, South Africa, the Honeydew Community Policing Forum was established to prevent crime in the community, and other community initiatives have been implemented in South Africa to deal with the country's crime problems.
Abstract
In 1997, Honeydew's crime problems ranked second only to that of Soweto in South Africa. Since the establishment of the Honeydew Community Policing Forum, crime statistics are down and the number of police officers has been reduced. Honeydew residents pay a monthly fee to the forum, and they work to empower the community, and the forum has a good relationship with local police. Other so-called "peace warrior" efforts to prevent crime in South Africa are noted, including those focused on crime victim support, child protection, theft offenses, and police stress management. 5 photographs
