THE RESULTS OF CALCULATING THE PREDICTIVE ACCURACY (VALIDITY) OF THE COLORADO STATE PATROLMAN ENTRANCE EXAM, ORAL INTERVIEW, AND ACADEMY FINAL EXAMINATION.
Abstract
THE PPA (PUBLIC PERSONNEL APTITUDE) POLICEMAN TEST SCORES ARE FAIRLY PREDICTIVE OF THE ACADEMY FINAL SCORES, BUT ARE NOT PREDICTIVE OF THE ORAL INTERVIEW SCORES OR THE SERVICE RATINGS. THE ORAL INTERVIEW HAS NO PRACTICAL PREDICTIVE POWER. THE ACADEMY FINAL SCORES ARE VERY SLIGHTLY PREDICTIVE OF THE SERVICE RATINGS; HOWEVER, ONLY ABOUT 5 PERCENT OF THE VARIABILITY OF THE SERVICE RATINGS CAN BE ACCOUNTED FOR BY THE ACADEMY FINAL. COMBINING SCORES ON THE PPA POLICEMAN TEST, THE ORAL INTERVIEW, AND THE ACADEMY FINAL ALLOWS ONLY A VERY SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IN THE PREDICTION OF SERVICE RATINGS. THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE SERVICE RATINGS ARE NOT FULLY ADEQUATE MEASURES OF PATROLMAN PERFORMANCE IS DISCUSSED. SOME TENTATIVE INFORMATION ON THE FAIRNESS OF THE PATROL SELECTION PROCEDURES FOR USE WITH MINORITY-GROUP APPLICANTS IS PRESENTED. (AUTHOR)
