Vehicle identification number (VIN) information is presented by model for both domestic and foreign passenger automobiles, motorcycles, boats, and snowmobiles, as is other identification information.
Abstract
Assembled especially for law enforcement officers dealing with stolen vehicles, this manual also provides a summary of motor laws and regulations for the United States and Canada by State or Province. Also included is information on certificate of title and registration requirements, on the existence of license plate directories and stolen-car and vehicle-number files, and on minimum ages for driver's and chauffeur's licenses. Also covered are requirements for proof of automobile ownership, the assignment of vehicle identification numbers, inspection stickers, and the existence of financial responsibility laws. Motor vehicle enforcement and administrative agencies and administrators are identified. Instructions for the interpretation of vehicle identification numbers in domestic and imported vehicles are also provided; photographs of sample numbers are included. Other sections are concerned with the location of identification number plates and engine and transmission identification (domestic vehicles only). Identification numbers on motorcycles, boats, and snowmobiles are reviewed, and diagrams illustrate various boat types, hull shapes, and types of boat propulsion. A directory of National Automobile Theft Bureaus is included, and a review of shipping records present at the bureaus is provided.
