This paper describes the operation of the Arson Task Force and a preliminary outline of the State Arson Strategy.
Abstract
The paper discusses the challenges of collaborative policy development and the eventual successes that can be achieved for arson prevention, not only in Western Australia but, potentially, across Australia. The Task Force provides a model of collaborative interagency effort to develop best practices in a critical social area. The paper describes a framework for a state arson strategy, a strategy based on Criminal Justice Prevention, Situational Prevention, Social Prevention, and Developmental Prevention. The paper observes that reducing the occurrence of arson can save lives, protect property, and lower the cost of fire to the whole community. However, no single strategy or tactic will achieve this. Only sustained effort and commitment by agencies and the community as a whole working in partnership will minimize the problem of arson. A comprehensive Arson Strategic Plan that engages stakeholders from the community and the private and public sectors will assist in the fight against arson. Figure, notes
