This kit provides background information, activity and program ideas, strategy suggestions, and models for action to engage the mass media in an effort to prevent crime.
Abstract
The first section discusses the advantages the media offer as partners in community crime prevention campaigns. The National Citizens' Crime Prevention Campaign is sponsored by the Crime Prevention Coalition, a group of 120 national constituency groups, State crime prevention organizations, and State and Federal government agencies. The campaign combines communications and action initiatives. This kit describes the series of general adult- market, youth, and Spanish-language public service announcements (PSA's) that make up the most visible element of the campaign. Community organizers are advised on targeting media decisionmakers, localizing the issues, broadening crime prevention efforts, and dealing with objections to the campaign. Finally, these materials outline the basic steps in constructing an effective media relations program.
