RECIDIVISM WAS FOUND TO BE A FUNCTION NOT ONLY OF THE PAROLEE'S BEHAVIOR BUT ALSO OF THE PAROLE OFFICER'S JUDGEMENT.
Abstract
IN 1963, IN CALIFORNIA, 27 PERCENT OF THE PRISON INTAKE WERE PAROLEES WHO HAD VIOLATED THE ADMINISTRATIVE RULES OF PAROLE. BY EXAMINING THE RESPONSES OF THE ENTIRE CALIFORNIA PAROLE STAFF TO TEN HYPOTHETICAL CASE HISTORIES, THE AUTHORS SOUGHT TO IDENTIFY THE FACTORS WHICH AFFECTED THE PAROLE OFFICERS DECISIONS. ORGANIZATIONAL POSITION, WORK EXPERIENCE, EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, AND THE OFFICE SETTING WERE ALL FOUND TO BE INFLUENCING FACTORS. REFERENCES MAY BE FOUND IN THE FOOTNOTES.
