This is a statewide examination of services available to and needed by Virginia juvenile parolees.

Abstract

Statewide, there were 207 officers who provided parole supervision in 1993, most in addition to handling other duties such as intake and probation supervision. Parole caseloads increased 57 percent over the past 6 years with only a 2.7- percent increase in Court Service Unit (CSU) staff resources. The report recommends that: (1) the Department of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) market juvenile parole services to make a concerted effort to educate the local community and its agencies about the juvenile justice system; (2) DYFS develop a planning strategy; (3) DYFS increase intensive parole supervision and promote comprehensive case management; (4) parole services providers work to improve community resources; (5) parole services develop improved strategies, consequences, and sanctions; and (6) CSU and Juvenile Correctional Center staffs work to improve interdepartmental communications.
