STATUTES AND PRACTICES OF THE PAROLE AGENCIES IN 50 STATES, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, AND THE UNITED STATES BOARD OF PAROLE.
Abstract
THERE IS A GROWING RECOGNITION OF THE NEED FOR CLOSER COORDINATION AND COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PAROLE AUTHORITIES AND THE VARIOUS SERVICES AIMED AT REALIZING THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC RESTORATION OF THE OFFENDER TO SOCIETY. THIS DOCUMENT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE PAROLE CORRECTIONS PROJECT OF THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION TO AID THOSE WHO ARE INVOLVED IN CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS OR SERVICES FOR PAROLEES. DESIGNED TO PROVIDE AN INCREASED KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROCESS OF PAROLE AND ITS INTER-RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER AGENCIES OF THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM, THIS PUBLICATION BEGINS BY OUTLINING THE ORIGINS AND HISTORY OF PAROLE AND THEN DELINEATES THE MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE PAROLE PROCESS. A SUMMARIZED ANALYSIS OF THE PAROLE STATUTES OF 53 JURISDICTIONS IS INCLUDED. THE DESCRIPTIONS NOTE SUCH ITEMS AS THE SELECTION AND MANAGEMENT OF PAROLE BOARDS, PAROLE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS, PAROLE HEARINGS, AND CONDITIONS OF PAROLE. A SECTION IN THE APPENDIX SETS FORTH THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF AN ADEQUATE PAROLE SYSTEM PROPOSED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION. (SNI ABSTRACT)
