THIS MANUAL, WHICH IS INTENDED TO AID PROSECUTORS IN ESTABLISHING OR EXPANDING USE OF PARALEGALS, PROVIDES DESCRIPTIONS OF THE KINDS OF DUTIES PARALEGALS MAY PERFORM AND OFFERS RECRUITING AND TRAINING SUGGESTIONS.
Abstract
THE IDEAS PRESENTED IN THIS MANUAL ARE DISTILLED FROM PRACTICES WHICH A NUMBER OF PROSECUTORS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING IN RECENT YEARS. DEFINITIONS OF PARALEGALS AND ISSUES IN THE USE OF PARALEGALS ARE REVIEWED IN THE INTRODUCTORY SECTION. OPERATIONAL JOBS WHICH PARALEGALS MAY PERFORM ARE THEN DESCRIBED. THESE INCLUDE JOBS RELATING TO INTAKE OF ARREST CASES, INTAKE AND FOLLOW-UP OF CITIZEN-INITIATED CASES, CALENDARING WITNESS LIAISON, BAIL FORFEITURE, BAIL REVIEW, AND PROBATION/PAROLE REVOCATION. ADMINISTRATIVE AND PLANNING JOBS THAT MAY BE HANDLED BY PARALEGALS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. A SPECIAL SECTION IS INCLUDED ON USE OF PARALEGALS FOR THE SMALL OFFICE AND PART-TIME PROSECUTOR. SUGGESTIONS ARE THEN OFFERED ON DESIGNING PARALEGAL JOBS THAT ARE PRACTICAL AND FEASIBLE, RECRUITING NEW PARALEGALS, AND TRAINING PARALEGALS. THE APPENDICES INCLUDE A LIST OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE RESOURCES, A LIST OF INSTITUTIONS OFFERING PARALEGAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND SAMPLE JOB DESCRIPTIONS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
