THE CREATION OF A PALESTINIAN-JORDANIAN STATE IS SUGGESTED AS A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF THE LANDLOCKED TERRORIST MINI-STATE ADVOCATED BY THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANIZATION (PLO).
Abstract
THE ARAB ESPOUSAL OF PALESTINIAN LIBERATION DID NOT EXIST BEFORE THE BALFOUR DECLARATION. EVIDENCE FOR THIS CAN BE FOUND IN REFERENCES OF THE ARAB NATIONALIST MOVEMENT AFTER 1880 TO THE UNITY OF SYRIA AND THE REFERENCE TO PALESTINE AS SOUTH SYRIA; IN THE ANTIPARTITION POSITION OF THE GENERAL SYRIAN AND ARAB CONGRESSES OF 1919; IN THE JERUSALEM MUFTI'S OPPOSITION TO THE PALESTINE MANDATE; AND IN THE GENERAL THRUST OF ARAB NATIONALISM AS DESCRIBED IN THE ARAB BA'ATH PARTY'S 1951 CONSTITUTION. ISRAELIS OPPOSE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A THIRD STATE WITHIN THE BORDERS OF HISTORIC PALESTINE BECAUSE THE STATED OBJECTIVES OF PALESTINIAN ORGANIZATION LEADERS INCLUDE TRANSFORMATION OF THE PROPOSED STATE INTO AN ARSENAL, BECAUSE OF SOVIET SUPPORT OF THE PALESTINIAN STATE AND THE PLO, AND BECAUSE OF THE DISADVANTAGES OF ISRAEL OF A LANDLOCKED PALESTINIAN STATE. THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE PALESTINIAN ARABS WILL BE SERVED BY A UNION WITH JORDAN AND WHATEVER PORTION OF THE WEST BANK FROM WHICH ISRAEL WITHDRAWS. NOTHING BUT A SPURIOUS RESPITE WILL BE ACHIEVED IF THE AREA BETWEEN ISRAEL AND JORDAN IS HANDED OVER TO THE PLO. (AOP)
