Abstract
THE AUTHOR EXPLORES THE UNDERLYING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE NATURE OF CRIME AND CRIMINALS, AS WELL AS CAUSES, PREVENTION, PUNISHMENT, AND RESEARCH. AS A NECESSARY BASIS FOR IMPROVING CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, HE URGES REEXAMINATION OF THESE UNDERLYING ASSUMPTIONS, REALIZATION OF ONE'S OWN SUBJECTIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH CRIME AND CRIMINALS, AND UNDERSTANDING OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AS SOMETHING ULTIMATELY ALIEN TO MORE OF US.
