An overview of the IBM resource access control facility (RACF) program Version 1 Release 3 is presented for the use of installation managers and personnel responsible for system data security and integrity.
Abstract
The product is designed to protect data from unauthorized disclosure or modification. To this end, the program verifies system users, authorizes access to system resources, and logs unauthorized attempts to enter the system as well as accesses to protected resources. The software product can be tailored to the needs of any particular installation, requires minimum administration for installation and maintenance, has little impact on system performance, and can be made transparent to the end users at the installation. The system functions by identifying users through userids and passwords, by limiting access to authorized resources, and by recording user activities. The manual details the various types of protection provided (e.g., user profiles, data set profiles, and general resource profiles) and RACF functions, including overviews of RACF commands, macro instructions, installation exits, and RACF generalization. Information on planning a RACF installation on RACF system requirements, options available, and basic installation procedures are also included. Tables, footnotes, illustrations, an index, and a glossary are included.
