THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS A DISCUSSION OF THE RESULTS OF AN ORGANIZATIONAL STUDY OF A PARTICULAR SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT (WHICH EMPLOYS 600 SWORN PERSONNEL) TO DETERMINE ITS SELF-CONCEPT AS IT RELATES TO ITS FUNCTIONING ACTIVITIES.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT HOW A POLICE ORGANIZATION SEES ITSELF HAS AN IMPORTANT BEARING ON A VARIETY OF ISSUES RELATED TO ORGANIZATIONAL LIFE SUCH AS RESOURCE ALLOCATION, OPERATIONAL PRIORITIES, AND PERSONNEL SELECTION. AN OPEN-ENDED INTERVIEW CONTAINING 25 RESPONSE CATEGORIES WAS ADMINISTERED TO THE TOP SEVEN COMMAND OFFICERS OF THE DEPARTMENT. IN LISTING DEPARTMENTAL PURPOSES, THE OFFICERS AGREED FAIRLY CLOSELY ON WHAT CONSTITUTED THE RANGE OF PURPOSES, BUT DISAGREED WIDELY ON THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF THOSE PURPOSES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICY AND PURPOSE IS ANALYZED FURTHER IN THE ARTICLE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...KAP
