This article describes the organization and structure of the Borstal School in Visakhaptnam, as well as resident characteristics, offenses represented, length of institutionalization, staff positions, admission procedures, and facilities.
Abstract
Data collected through interviews and observations conducted over an 8-month period (July 1981 - March 1982) are presented. Demographic characteristics of offenders at the school are provided. Thirty-three percent of all inmates have been sentenced to 2-year terms, and 42 percent have been sentenced to 3-year terms. The most common offense occasioning resident imprisonment was theft, followed by murder. Sixty-four percent of the inmates were between 16 and 18 years of age, and about 58 percent had some elementary and secondary school education. Six tables and 16 references are included.
