Because the application of community policing to rural areas and small towns presents some interesting ironies and contradictions, this paper considers various approaches to rural policing and how dimensions of community policing apply in rural areas.
Abstract
Rural policing includes small town police departments, rural sheriffs, and rural State police. Community policing can be applied in rural areas in accordance with philosophical, strategic, tactical, and organizational dimensions of community policing. The practical application of these dimensions within the different contexts of rural policing is discussed. The authors conclude that community policing is just as applicable to small towns and rural areas as it is to urban and suburban areas. 6 references
