Based on interviews with 41 therapists who have developed expertise in working with male survivors of sexual abuse, this text discusses a treatment model for these victims.
Abstract
The book discusses the frequency of male sexual victimization, the effects of this victimization on the individual, and issues that victims tend to bring into therapy. The four-phase treatment model for male survivors described here consists of breaking silence, the victim phase, the survivor phase, and the thriver phase. Subsequent chapters focus on the essential processes that pertain to all therapeutic modalities, interventions that therapists have developed for use in each of the treatment phases, contraindicators for group treatment and interventions that can be used in male survivor groups, critical issues that are relevant to the treatment of male survivors, and the application of the therapeutic process to adolescent clients. The final two chapters discuss issues pertaining to the therapist as well as resources relevant to both the therapist and client. 6 appendixes and 90 references
