Abstract
The 1,718 probationers living in Syracuse, N.Y., represented 45 percent of the total population under supervision. Probation officers made 28,133 positive home visits during 1999. A total of 5,303 criminal court cases and 418 family court supervision cases passed from probation either favorably or unfavorably. The department had 3,783 cases on supervision as of December 31, 1999. Approximately 21 percent of the probationers under criminal court supervision in 1999 were under violation. Thirty-seven percent of the probation violations disposed in 1999 were restored to probation, withdrawn, or discharged; 47 percent were sentenced to incarceration. The remaining 16 percent were discharged form the sentence of probation. The criminal court probation population tended to be white and male. The Persons in Need of Supervision (PINS) Adjustment Program received 863 cases. Youths between ages 14-16 years old represented 73 percent of all PINS referrals. The Family Court Intake Unit opened 1,610 cases. Tables and figure
