This report summarizes the accomplishments of the Onondaga County, NY, Probation Department during 1998.
Abstract
Highlights of the Department’s activities in 1998 included: (1) Probation, Rehabilitation, Intensive Services and Management (PRISM) received local, State and national recognition as a successful collaborative effort (Probation, Social Services, Mental Health and Salvation Army) to stem the burgeoning costs of out-of-home placements; (2) The Department launched a collaborative effort with the Syracuse Police Department to create a visible presence in the community to reduce street violence, especially among youth; (3) The Department administered four Alternative to Incarceration programs; (4) The Department continued in-house training in all aspects of use of force, use of deadly physical force, qualification and requalification of firearms; (5) Staff completed 5,148 hours (an average of 56 hours per person) of continuing education; and (6) The Onondaga County Probation Department is the only probation department in the State requiring its officers to work outside traditional hours (enhanced supervision).
