NARRATIVE AND STATISTICS ON RELEASES FROM THE CALIFORNIA CIVIL ADDICT PROGRAMS, ESTABLISHED IN 1961 TO TREAT AND CONTROL NARCOTIC ADDICTS, IN LIEU OF CRIMINAL COMMITMENT.
Abstract
THREE MAJOR GROUPS OF VARIABLES ARE STRESSED IN THIS STUDY. THESE ARE 1) RESIDENT BACKGROUND VARIABLES, WHICH INCLUDE SEX, ETHNIC GROUP, COMMITMENT OFFENSE, AND RELEASE DESIGNATION, 2) PROGRAM VARIABLES, INCLUDING THE INSTITUTIONAL BRANCH OR DORMITORY FROM WHICH THE RESIDENT WAS RELEASED, AND THE GEOGRAPHIC AREA TO WHICH HE WAS RELEASED, AND 3) OUTCOME VARIABLES, WHICH REFER TO THE INDIVIDUALS OUTPATIENT STATUS, DETECTED DRUG USE, OR TYPE OF RETURN. STATISTICS INDICATE THAT THE PERCENT OF RELEASES STILL IN ACTIVE STATUS, A FORM OF GOOD STANDING, INCREASED FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN. OF THE ONE PERCENT OF RELEASES WHO DIED WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR, APPROXIMATELY HALF WERE DUE TO AN OVERDOSE. THE STUDY INCLUDES A FOLLOW-UP BY COMMITMENT OFFENSE, AND AN ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BRANCH, GEOGRAPHIC AREA, RELEASE DESIGNATION, AND OUTCOME. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
