This article describes the improvements made to the Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization's (OLETC's) 2006 Mock Prison Riot event.
Abstract
Established by the National Institute of Justice in 1995 to develop and deploy an active, broad-based national program to assist in the commercialization process for innovative technologies that assist the law enforcement and corrections communities, the OLETC has been staging the week-long Mock Prison Riot event since 1997. Major changes were implemented for the 2006 Mock Prison Riot event, which marked the 10th anniversary of the event. The event organizers undertook a comprehensive review of their processes that resulted in several changes, beginning with registration. The registration process now features a comprehensive database and the OLETC is exploring options to implement on-site, self-registration for the 2007 Mock Prison Riot. Scenario scheduling also changed to allow for more scenarios to be offered with staggering start times to allow for greater participation. Seating areas were added to the technology showcase area to enhance interaction between the technologists and the participants and technology demonstrations were tailored to be performed in the actual conditions under which they may be deployed. The 2006 event also featured the largest and most collaborative Mock Prison Riot in the event's history, which attracted a record number of participants (1,400 people attended) and a record number of technologies (90 technologies were showcased). The 2006 changes were highly effective and the Mock Prison Riot team is already planning for the 2007 event.
