This report describes Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), an inflammatory agent that is sprayed into a person's face and causes the involuntary closing of the eyes due to a burning sensation.
Abstract
OC also causes blood to flow to the affected throat area, giving the feeling of a restricted airway. It poses no danger of asphyxiation. Some OC products include tear gas or mace, but this mixing produces the potential for a chemical reaction to the eyes and skin. Propellants are another issue, because the mixtures may have problems of flammability, settling, and degradation. A product is needed that uses a propellant system that is noncarcinogenic, nonflammable, nontoxic, and effective in the resin's climate. The propellant should also be effective for distances greater than 10 feet and be able to produce a fogging pattern from a compact container. A simple control top and actuator are also desirable.
