This report explains the organizational structure, operations, and activities of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction during fiscal year 1998; provides profiles on each Ohio prison; and presents statistical data on inmates, sentences, and corrections expenditures.
Abstract
The director's message notes that the Department continued to grow in challenges, programs, accomplishments, prisons, staff, and offender population during the year. In addition, corrections agencies continued to incorporate restorative justice activities and principles into daily operations. The State also emphasized victim services and offender redress. A total of 15,644 male offenders and 2,037 female offenders were committed to the State correctional system from July 1997 through June 1998. These included 5,281 offenders committed for drug law offenses, 4,494 for offenses against persons, 3,378 for miscellaneous property offenses, 1,415 for burglary, 1,144 for sex offenses, 523 for firearms offenses, 586 for fraud, 787 for public justice or related offenses, 70 for motor vehicle offenses, and 3 for other offenses.
