THIS FILM AND ACCOMPANYING HANDBOOK WERE CREATED TO HELP NIGHT PATROL OFFICERS USE THEIR EQUIPMENT AND DARKNESS TO THEIR ADVANTAGE SO THAT OFFICER INJURIES AND DEATHS WILL BE REDUCED.
Abstract
NOT ONLY ARE THERE NUMEROUS DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NIGHT AND DAY PATROLS, BUT RECENT STUDIES SHOW THAT CALLS ARE MORE FREQUENT AND MORE SERIOUS AT NIGHT. MOREOVER, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AN OFFICER'S EQUIPMENT CAN DIFFER DRAMATICALLY DEPENDING UPON THE LIGHT AVAILABLE. THIS FILM, INTENDED FOR POLICE TRAINEES OF VARIED BACKGROUNDS, CONSISTS OF THREE SITUATIONS EACH SHOWN IN THREE VIGNETTES. THE SECOND AND THIRD VIGNETTES ARE REPLAYS OF EACH OF THE THREE SITUATIONS AND DEMONSTRATE ALTERNATIVE, BUT NOT NECESSARILY CORRECT, METHODS OF HANDLING THE SITUATIONS. GUIDELINES FOR DISCUSSING EACH SITUATION ARE INCLUDED IN THE HANDBOOKS. IN THE FIRST SITUATION, A NEIGHBOR REPORTS A PROWLER ATTEMPTING TO BREAK INTO THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR, AND TWO OFFICERS RESPOND TO THE CALL. IN THE SECOND SITUATION, TWO OFFICERS ON ROUTINE NIGHT PATROL DISCOVER A BURGLARY IN PROGRESS. FINALLY, A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP INVOLVES A FLEEING FELON, ARMED AND DANGEROUS, WHO IS DRIVING A STOLEN CAR. SEE ALSO NCJ 67315. (AOP)
