Based on information in the New Jersey Department of Corrections computer files as of December 31, 1993, this report provides information on the offenses, race, age, and county of commitment of parolees in New Jersey.
Abstract
The total parole population was 32,400. Of these, 10,154 offenders had been convicted for violent crimes, 6,499 for property crimes, 14,124 for drug law offenses, and the rest for other offenses. Forty-two percent of the violent offenders were on parole for robbery, 26 percent for assault, 13 percent for sex offenses, 11 percent for homicide, and 9 percent for other personal offenses. More than 90 percent of the drug convictions were for drug distribution, manufacture, and sale. Sixty percent of the total parole population was black. The median age of parolees was 32.
