Abstract
The data provide information on type of offense, age and race/ethnicity of offenders, and county of commitment. Thirty-seven percent (9,725) of the total parole population consisted of persons who had committed violent crimes. Of these offenders, 42 percent were on parole for robbery, 25 percent for assault, 11 percent for homicide, 10 percent for sexual assault and other offenses, and 8 percent for other persons offenses. Drug offenses were the single most common offense type. More than half of the total parole population (58 percent) were black, and 95 percent were age 21 or older. Of all offenders on parole, 43 percent were committed from the four major counties of Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic; Essex County was the commitment county for 17 percent of all parolees under supervision; and fewer parolees were committed from Hunterdon and Sussex than any other county (.6 percent). 4 figures and 8 tables
